康耐公司通过现场自行安装M12*1插座进一步扩充了其产品系列。新的应用领域和要求规范直接导致对连接技术提出了新的机电要求。当一个设备单独连接的时候，要求其具备灵活性。而新的M12*1插头满足这些要求。
因此，用户具备了从前面（“外面”）安装插座外壳和端子以及从里面（组合安装）连接的可能性。这常常应用在电机制造（液压马达）和旋转编码器。
由于在方形块后面区域的插槽进行编码，8*45°的编码使得连接器配对所需的位置角度得以实现。*在装配状态下外壳的防护等级为IP67，未配对情况下接触面防护等级为IP20。
